Electoral Regulation Forum
Our Flagship Event
KNOWLEDGE SHARING
COMMUNITY BUILDING
The Electoral Regulation Forum is the biggest event in the Network’s calendar. A biennial 2-day dialogue, it brings together leading and emerging experts in electoral regulation, management and design from practice, academia, and civil society. It reflects three defining aspects of our nationwide network for Australia:
a commitment to examine significant, pressing and emerging topics concerning electoral regulation;
to do so through diverse expert perspectives, bringing together academic and practitioner communities; and
situating the issues affecting Australia in a global and comparative context.
TREND SPOTTING
2024 Forum
‘Responding to Rapid Change’
Formerly known as the Biennial Workshop, the event was renamed in 2024 to reflect its size and its focus on connecting experts from a variety of backgrounds. The 2024 Forum was hosted by Melbourne Law School on 2-3 December and featured a two-day program of discussions and events under the theme ‘Responding to Rapid Change’. Seven panels focused on a wide variety of topics, reflecting the diversity of expertise across the Network as well as commonalities across the Network.
Day 1 comprised four panels: ‘The 2023 Voice Referendum: Lessons for the Future’; ‘Global Trends & the Super-Election Year’; ‘Political Financing’; and a public panel on ‘Lies, Law and Elections: Regulating Truth in Political Advertising’ (see below).
Day 2 comprised two substantive panels, on ‘The Impact of AI & Social Media’ and ‘Representation & Inclusion in Elections’, as well as a concluding session gathering reflections from across the two days and identifying a future research agenda for the Network.

Public Panel
‘Lies, Law and Elections: Regulating Truth in Political Advertising’
In 2024 the Forum included a public panel featuring 3 speakers and moderated by Jon Faine.
Description: Can law and regulation achieve more truthful elections? Across Australia and internationally, the prevalence of falsehoods at election time has prompted a new wave of thinking and intense debates about one of the defining issues facing informed voting and electoral integrity today. This compelling and thought-provoking panel brought together experts and thought leaders from academia and practice.
